About Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge encompasses approximately 4,500 acres of wetlands, seasonally flooded forests, bayous, and Black Bayou Lake itself, located near Monroe in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. The refuge preserves one of the last remaining bottomland hardwood ecosystems in the region, providing critical habitat for migratory waterfowl, wading birds, alligators, and various fish species. Established in 1997, the refuge serves as a key green space in an otherwise developed area, emphasizing conservation, environmental education, and recreation. Visitors can explore several trails through hardwood forests and wetland edges, offering ample opportunities for wildlife observation, especially during the fall and winter migratory seasons. The refuge also promotes paddling activities on Black Bayou Lake, allowing close encounters with aquatic life amid cypress and tupelo trees. Interpretive programs and seasonal events cater to families and outdoor enthusiasts, making it a popular destination for birders keen on spotting ducks, herons, and egrets. Black Bayou Lake Refuge protects habitat essential not only for waterfowl but also terrestrial wildlife such as deer, raccoons, and numerous amphibians. The combination of water-based and land-based recreation makes this refuge valuable for a range of visitors seeking tranquility, nature study, and active outdoor experiences. Its proximity to Monroe provides straightforward access while maintaining a natural environment where ecological processes can continue relatively undisturbed.
